And now, your job…

I originally came from a corporate background, as some of you know, and I truly hated it.

The more I think about it, the more I regret wasting years of my life doing something I despised, with people I didn’t respect.

I hated working with lazy “journeymen” who were purely there for the salary and contributed very little to their work, or anything else for that matter. More often than not, they were selfish and only motivated by protecting their meaningless square metre of corporate turf.

I often wondered what their tombstone would read when it came to the bit that mentioned your contribution to society.

“Turned up” would have been the most appropriate epitaph, I think.

I hated the routine, I hated Monday mornings, I hated working for arrogant bosses and I hated working my ass off for a couple of weeks holiday a year (and being made to feel guilty about taking that).

I’m guessing many of you are in the same situation, in a J-O-B you can’t stand, so let’s start with some good news!

Why climbing the corporate ladder is history

Freelancing is changing the way we work rapidly and beyond all recognition.

Technology and the internet mean you no longer need to be confined to a traditional 9-5 job. More and more workers are rejecting the 9-5 grind of a traditional job, staying with a single employer for years, and selling their soul on the corporate ladder for meaningless promotions and a couple of weeks’ vacation each year.

Millions have taken to freelancing for the chance to work independently, set their own schedules and choose the work they do, escaping a boss they hate in the process. Others earn money freelance writing to subsidize a pension or other fixed income.

How big is the freelancing pie? Very big.

If we take just one example, Upwork.com has 3.6 million clients (people looking for freelancers) and they have 9 million freelancers in 180 countries worldwide. And that’s just one platform!

The gig economy is booming right now with no signs of slowing up any time soon.

It’s clear. Whatever your reason for considering freelancing, the opportunity to make your living on your own terms has never been greater.

But, what’s the best way to approach freelancing in general, and freelance copywriting in particular?

Good question, here’s the answer.
