Hi, it’s Les.
If there’s one question I get asked by budding freelancers more than any other it’s “how do I get clients?".
It’s understandable if you’re starting off with no clients, no history, and no testimonials you find yourself in a challenging and, to be fair, quite a scary place.
Now, if you’ve taken my 6-Step Fast-Track Copywriting program, you’ll already have strategies under your belt for getting clients by cold emailing and using LinkedIn.
And I can guarantee that having just one or two steady clients make a huge difference to your peace of mind, and your pocket of course 😉
Now, my good friend Brett Dev is about to spill the beans on how he goes about landing new clients (and getting referrals & testimonials).
I’ve been following Brett for years now and his stuff is solid. That said, he blew me away with his latest email, I’ll let Brett explain in his own words…
Brett’s client getting (and more) strategy
As someone who moved to Thailand with literally nothing back in 2015, I know exactly how difficult it is to get started online.
I also know what a huge difference just one or two clients can make.
A couple of days ago, I mentioned that I am putting the finishing touches on a brand new workshop that will teach you how to implement one of my most effective strategies.
Here's a quick overview of what you can expect...
Step 1:
The first step in this strategy is to come up with a small "micro-service" or a free trial that you can offer to potential clients online.
This could be something as simple as setting up conversion tracking for them if you offer paid ads.
It could be something as simple as ranking their business name on Google if you are offering SEO services.
Or, it could be building a landing page for them and collecting email opt-ins if you are selling marketing funnels.
Step 2:
Once you've decided what micro-service you want to offer, the next step is to get that offer in front of the right targeted prospects.
The vast majority of freelancers operate in the business-to-business space, and so, if you utilise low-cost tools such as GMass, Dux Soup, and LinkedIn you can easily get your offer in front of hundreds, if not, thousands of the right prospects.
Step 3:
Once you've cast your bait and once your prospects start to bite, in exchange for delivering your micro-service, you want them to agree to give you the following three things in return:
You want them to send you an unbiased testimonial or case study.
You want them to refer you to a minimum of two people within their industry.
You want them to "consider" becoming a long-term client.
Step 4:
Once you've delivered on your free trial offer, you need to quickly follow up, and make it easy for them to deliver on their end of the bargain.
I use a free tool called Bonjoro to do this as it makes it easy to collect testimonials and referrals.
Here's the big secret...
The secret to what makes this simple free trial offer so fool-proof is that even if your prospect fails to deliver on all three of your requests, let's say they only give you a couple of referrals, or, they only supply you with a testimonial.
That's still a win!
Case studies and testimonials are hands-down the most powerful form of social proof.
And... when you combine testimonials with personal referrals, your network will begin to grow rapidly.
Pretty simple, right?
Not rocket science!
Like a lot of things, the devil is in the details, so you do need to make sure that you set this up and pitch it the right way.
I'll talk more about the details in an upcoming email, but for now...
Try to think about what you could offer someone that would take less than an hour of your time and that would deliver them a quick win.
PS:Â This strategy doesn't just work for traditional freelancing services such as web design.
For example, if you teach English online and want more students, then you may want to offer potential students a free 30-minute trial lesson.
Amazing value right there I think you’ll agree!
I’ll keep you updated with developments on Brett’s workshop.
Best,
Les
