SUBSTACK PROFILE vs PUBLICATION THE CONFUSION CLEARED UP

The Substack interface is split into two distinct environments, and if you don’t know the boundary between them, you’ll waste time looking for the wrong things in the wrong places and clicking all the wrong buttons.

New writers on Substack often run into this common technical hurdle.

I’ve recorded a short walkthrough to show you exactly how to toggle between them.

My video covers:

  • Your Profile: Where your subscriptions and personal activity live.

  • Your Publication/Newsletter: Containing your posts, stats, and settings.

  • The Dashboard Switch: The specific navigation path to get from your personal account settings to your newsletter backend.

On your Profile, you’re a reader. This is where you follow other writers, manage your own inbox, and join conversations. It is your social identity on the platform. If you’re looking for things to read or people to chat with, stay here.

Your Publication/Newsletter is your workstation. This is where you do the actual work of writing, editing, and managing your Substack business. All the technical data, such as subscriber lists & stats, email open rates, and payment settings, is kept strictly in the Publication dashboard.

Substack keeps these two areas separate so that your personal reading habits don’t get mixed up with your professional tools. Knowing which mode you are in helps you find the right buttons quickly.

Once you understand that your account is the container and your publication/newsletter is the product, navigation starts to become more intuitive.

I’m looking for the next technical hurdle to cover in these tutorials. Drop a comment below if there’s something you’d like me to cover, or you’d like to comment on this tutorial.
