Hi, it’s Les,
I find myself consistently asking clients “what voice would you like me to write in?” or “do you have a brand voice?”.
And it got me to thinking that we all throw the word “voice” around quite freely, but when did you last think about what voice really is?
I set about tracking down a definition of voice in the written word, and this is about the best explanation I found:
Your content is the “what.” Your tone of voice is the “how.” Tone of voice is the way your message comes across to your reader. In verbal speech, this is communicated through pitch and inflection. In copywriting, you portray emotion with word choice, punctuation, and style of font.
When I send a proposal to clients, I often give them examples of tone of voice to set them thinking. I’m finding more and more these days that clients are prepared to try something new - possibly because what they’ve tried before hasn’t worked too well.
And that makes sense if you think about it. My clients are in the technical space - IT companies, software and applications, that kind of thing. Who wants to be bored to death with dreary technical content when a decent Copywriter can add a bit of buzz to the content - maybe even get it read for a change!
Here’s what I actually send to clients to get them thinking - feel free to amend and copy…
